Zhang Lei

Gradually transferring his career from design teaching to architecture practice, Zhang Lei Started his studio Atelier ZhangLei in Nanjing in 2001. With 10 years’ development, Atelier ZhangLei has become one of the active and leading vanguard architecture practices in China.

Zhang Lei was recently named as candidates for the 2012 BSI Swiss Architectural Award On May 2009, Icon Magazine named Zhang Lei as one of the 20 architects who are transforming the future and changing the way we work.
Atelier ZhangLei was among the ten architecture offices around the world selected as Design Vanguard 2008 by《Architectural Record》

“Concrete Slit House” entered as honorable mention project by the ar+d World Emerging Architecture Awards 2008 by《Architectural Review》, and got Gold Awards in the HKIA Cross-Strait Architectural Design Awards 2013

Aside from winning awards like “WA Chinese Architecture Awards” (2002,2006,2008) and “Chinese Architecture & Art Awards” (2004) etc., Zhang Lei is also actively involved in major international exhibitions on contemporary Chinese architecture taking place in Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, America & Japan.

Zhang Lei’s works are published in domestic and international magazines & books like GA Document, Domus, Lotus, Architectural Record, Architectural Design, Architectural Review, Mark, Wallpaper, Oris, Area, Hise, Architecture Now, Architecture Now Houses, Architecture Now Museums, etc.

Graduated from Southeast University in Nanjing, 1988 & Finished his postgraduate study in ETH-Zurich, 1993, Zhang Lei is now Professor in the School of Architecture & Urban Planning in Nanjing University. He was invited as guest lecturer & critic in ETH-Zurich, Hong Kong University, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Chiba Institute of Technology in Tokyo & GSD-Harvard, etc.

AZL Architects was established in Nanjing & Hangzhou in June 2009 to extend the dreams and responsibilities of Zhang Lei. He is now working with young talented partners, confronting challenges of critical issues like culture, living & capital, resolving problems in respect to environmental & urban factors and creating future living space in solid concrete base of high construction quality.
